Women Veterans Do Exist

Updated: Jan 23

It’s hard to put into words, but the awe shock looks that I get when I show my military retired ID card or when I tell a neighbor that I’m a veteran are PRICELESS.

When I talk to my Air Force sisters in the picture below they say the exact same thing.

There is an assumption that we aren’t veterans, but we are. Yes, we may blend in really well with the rest of the world, but we are very proud of our service🇺🇸🫡

It’s not lost on me that we are ordinary women who were able to do extraordinary things in the military. We served in different parts of the world with different people with different backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences in different roles.

In retirement, when I reflect on all of these experiences, there are moments where I do feel invisible or disconnected, but when I do, I call or text my Air Force sister's “crew” to help me deal with these feelings. Unfortunately, it took me a minute to start reaching out because I didn’t want to bother anyone, I didn’t want to look weak, or I believed my feelings weren’t valid.

Transitioning from the military can be hard, and you shouldn’t do it alone. Fortunately, I had my husband and a few mentors who retired from the military a couple of years before me help me big time with the adjustments. However, there were so many things that happened that I didn’t know were going to affect me. I felt a bit betrayed because the military didn’t prepare me for the emotional impacts of retirement.

Now, I’m making sure no woman within my reach is walking this military transition journey by themselves. We’re all at different stages of transition and some of us need a little support and some of us need a bit more.
