From Service Member to Transformational Speaker: Building a Personal Brand That Opens Doors

My last official military photo
My last official military photo

When I retired from the United States Air Force after 30 years of service, I expected to miss the people, the mission, and the routine.

What I didn't expect to have was an identity crisis.

For three decades, I knew exactly who I was. I was a Command Chief Master Sergeant. I was a proven leader. I wore the uniform with pride. My rank, responsibilities, and purpose were clear.

Then, on October 1st, 2021, I was officially relieved of duty.

I remember looking in the mirror and asking myself a question that was much harder than I imagined...Who is Rochelle now?

That question was scary.

Not because I lacked experience or confidence, but because I had spent so many years serving an organization that my identity had become intertwined with the role I played.

Like so many accomplished women, I found myself standing at the intersection of success and uncertainty, which gave me a lot of anxiety and stress.

Reinventing Myself on Purpose

I knew I didn't want retirement to be the end of my impact. I wanted it to be the beginning of something even bigger, so I decided I wanted to speak for a living.

That decision changed the trajectory of my next chapter.

But becoming a transformational speaker wasn't just about creating a keynote. It required me to intentionally build a new identity.

I had to ask myself questions I'd never considered before.

  • What do I want to be known for?

  • What message am I called to share?

  • What should my wardrobe communicate before I say a word?

  • What image reflects who I am today?

  • What topics align with my purpose?

  • How do I want people to experience me?

  • What kind of opportunities do I want to attract?

These aren't superficial questions.

They're identity questions.

Your Personal Brand Is More Than a Logo

Many people think personal branding is about colors, websites, or social media.

It's so much deeper than that.

Your personal brand is the intentional expression of who you are, what you believe, and the impact you want to make.

As I began answering those questions, everything started to align.

I wrote books.

I created guidebooks.

I created my website.

I started networking.

I collaborated and partnered with incredible leaders.

I launched talk shows.

I built strategic partnerships.

I developed my signature S.L.A.Y.™ Method.

I refined my executive presence and found my authentic voice.

Without realizing it at first, I wasn't just building a business. I was creating an ecosystem that continues to attract aligned opportunities instead of chasing them.

The Moment of Truth

One of the most rewarding moments has been happening more recently. People are starting to recognize me outside of the military for the work I've been doing.

People are stopping me in public and saying, "I know you from LinkedIn", "I've seen your videos" and "You're the SLAY Queen."

These comments confirm something I've come to believe with my whole heart...when you intentionally build your personal brand, people begin recognizing you for the value you bring, not just the title you once held.

Your Next Chapter Deserves Intention

So many of us spend years building successful careers. Then life changes.

Retirement.

A promotion.

Entrepreneurship.

A career transition.

An empty nest.

A new dream.

And suddenly they're asking the same question I asked.

Who am I now?

The answer isn't found by looking backward. It's created by deciding who you want to become. That's why I believe investing in your personal brand isn't a luxury.

It's one of the most important investments you'll ever make.

Because your personal brand helps you:

  • Clarify your authentic identity.

  • Communicate your expertise with confidence.

  • Increase your visibility and influence.

  • Create meaningful impact.

  • Align your work with your sense of purpose.

  • Attract opportunities that reflect who you are becoming.

You Are More Than Your Last Title

After many edits and evolutions, today, my LinkedIn headline reads as follows:

Transformational Speaker & Media Personality | Elevating Women in Leadership, Visibility & Influence | Executive Presence • Personal Branding • Authentic Identity | Creator of the S.L.A.Y.™ Method | 30-Year USAF Veteran

Every word represents a choice.

A choice to define myself instead of allowing my past title to define me.

A choice to continue serving in a different capacity.

A choice to build influence that extends far beyond the military.

If you're in a season of transition, know this:

You don't have to have all the answers today.

But don't be afraid to ask yourself the hard questions:

  • Who do you want to become?

  • What impact do you want to make?

  • How do you want people to remember you?

Your next chapter isn't about replacing who you were.

It's about becoming more of who you were always meant to be.

Because when your identity is rooted in purpose, your personal brand becomes the bridge between where you've been and the legacy you're creating.
