Unlocking Style Versatility: Pairing, Wearing, and Owning It with Confidence

In regards to my image consultant side of the business, I've been providing image assessments and wardrobe audits for women over 40 who are looking to elevate their personal brand through fashion. One of my clients is struggling with purchasing clothes and either returning them or not ever wearing them. According to internal research at Rent the Runway, the average American buys 68 pieces of clothing a year, and 80% of that is seldom worn.

If you're buying basics like jeans or blouses that you later learn don't fit comfortably for all-day wear, or on the other side of the spectrum, buying bold pieces that don't fit your personality, you're probably experiencing buyer's remorse, wasted money, and wasted time waiting in the returns line.

Before you buy anything, there are important questions you need to ask yourself in the fitting room...even if it takes you longer to try things on because you'll feel a whole lot better about your buys:)

Where can I pair this with?

When it comes to pairing outfits, the key is versatility. You want pieces that can easily mix and match to create various looks for different occasions. Think of timeless basics like a crisp white button-down shirt, a well-fitted blazer, or a classic pair of denim jeans. These staples serve as the foundation for countless outfits, whether you're aiming for a professional ensemble or a casual chic vibe.

Accessorizing is another game-changer. Statement jewelry, such as bold earrings or a chunky necklace, can instantly elevate any outfit. Don't underestimate the power of shoes and bags either – they can take your look from day to night effortlessly. For a more polished appearance, opt for neutral tones that complement your main piece without overpowering it. Remember, confidence is your best accessory. Whatever you pair your outfit with, wear it with pride, and you'll slay any occasion!

Where and how often can I wear this?

The beauty of fashion lies in its versatility. The piece you're eyeing can likely be dressed up or down to suit various settings and events. For instance, if it's a tailored blazer, you can rock it in the boardroom during the week and then style it with jeans for a casual brunch on the weekend. Consider the fabric and design to gauge its appropriateness for different occasions. A flowy maxi dress might be perfect for a summer garden party but less ideal for a corporate meeting. However, with the right accessories and layering pieces, you can adapt it to different settings effortlessly.

As for how often you can wear it, aim for maximum mileage. Invest in pieces that you can mix and match with your existing wardrobe to create fresh looks each time. Quality over quantity is key – choose items that are well-made and timeless to ensure longevity in your wardrobe.

Is this easy enough to clean (take care of) for my lifestyle?

Practicality is paramount, especially when it comes to caring for your clothes. Before making a purchase, consider the care instructions provided by the brand. Pieces that are machine washable and low maintenance are ideal for busy lifestyles. Additionally, think about your habits and preferences. If you are someone who prefers hand-washing delicate fabrics, make sure the garment can withstand gentle treatment. Likewise, if you're prone to spills and stains, opt for fabrics that are easy to spot clean or toss in the wash without fuss. Investing in a few key pieces that are both stylish and easy to care for will save you time and stress in the long run. After all, you deserve to spend more time slaying and less time worrying about laundry!

How does wearing this make me feel?

The way we dress has a profound impact on our mood and confidence. When you put on an outfit that makes you feel amazing, it's like stepping into your power suit. Whether it's a killer blazer that makes you feel like a boss or a flowy dress that makes you feel effortlessly chic, clothing has the power to transform not just your outward appearance but also your inner state of mind. Pay attention to how you feel when trying on the piece in question. Does it make you stand a little taller? Do you catch yourself admiring your reflection in the mirror? Trust those feelings – they're your intuition telling you that you're onto something special.

Ultimately, the best outfits are the ones that make you feel like the most authentic and empowered version of yourself. So, go ahead, embrace your unique style, and let your outfit be a reflection of your inner slay queen confidence!
