Transformation stories often focus on dramatic physical changes—the before-and-after photos, the scale milestones, and the numbers. But my journey was so much more than shedding pounds. It was about shedding self-doubt, discovering resilience, and stepping into a version of myself I barely recognized but was determined to become. Dropping 60 pounds just a year before enlisting in the Air Force was the spark that ignited my lifelong journey of discipline, courage, and personal branding.
This wasn’t just a weight loss story. This was about reclaiming my narrative and proving to myself that I could achieve the extraordinary. It shaped not only my 30-year military career but also the foundation of the business powerhouse I built in the years that followed. Let me take you on this journey to inspire and show you the power of transformation and intentional branding.
The Wake-Up Call: A Moment of Truth
At 18 years old, I found myself staring into the mirror, unsatisfied with the reflection staring back. But it wasn’t just the physical weight that burdened me; it was the weight of self-doubt, insecurity, and fear of failure. I realized that if I wanted a different future, I had to start with myself.
During the summer before my junior year of high school, we were getting fitted for new band uniforms. As I stepped on the scale, the woman weighing us called out loudly, “200 pounds!” Her words echoed in my ears, leaving me mortified and stunned. That moment was a wake-up call. Determined to make a change, I started working as a busgirl at a restaurant called "Chi-Chi’s." Long double shifts clearing tables and serving customers became my daily grind. Over the next four months, I lost 40 pounds. By the end of my senior year, I had shed another 20 pounds.
Through that journey, I discovered the transformative power of discipline and determination. I overhauled my diet and embraced a new, healthier lifestyle. Because of this transformation, I was able to enlist in the United States Air Force, meeting the weight requirement to pursue my dream. What I didn’t realize at the time was that this wasn’t just about weight—it was about building the resilience and life skills that would carry me through decades of challenges and successes. It was the foundation for everything I’ve achieved since. I've maintained my weight loss for over 30 years!
The Weight Loss: More Than Just Numbers
Losing 60 pounds was no small feat. It demanded early mornings, grueling workouts, and saying no to temptations that once controlled me. The process was as much mental as it was physical. With every pound lost, I gained something more valuable: confidence, clarity, and a belief that I could overcome any obstacle.
What’s often overlooked in weight loss stories is the identity shift that happens. I didn’t just lose weight—I became someone who prioritized herself, made intentional choices, and embraced discomfort in pursuit of growth. This mindset shift set the stage for everything that followed.
Boot Camp and Beyond: Resilience in Action
Fast forward to my first day of basic training. The lessons I’d learned during my transformation journey—discipline, grit, and mental toughness—were put to the test. While others struggled to adjust, I thrived because I’d already proven to myself that I could endure and excel under pressure.
The Air Force became my proving ground. Over 30 years, I climbed the ranks, eventually becoming a Command Chief Master Sergeant. The discipline I cultivated during my transformation wasn’t just a physical skill; it was a mindset that allowed me to lead, inspire, and overcome challenges on a global scale. From deployments to high-stakes missions, my ability to stay composed and focused became my greatest asset.
The Birth of a Personal Brand
It wasn’t until later in my military career that I realized I had a personal brand. Whether leading airmen or briefing high-ranking officials, I was constantly communicating who I was and what I stood for.
My journey of transformation had taught me to be intentional about how I presented myself. I learned that branding isn’t just about appearance—it’s about the story you tell, the confidence you exude, and the value you bring to every room you enter. This realization would later become the cornerstone of my post-military career.
Transitioning to Civilian Life: Finding My Voice
When I retired from the Air Force, I faced a new challenge: redefining myself outside of the uniform. The transition was daunting. I had spent decades in a structured environment, and now I had to carve out a new identity in the civilian world.
This is where my personal branding journey truly began. I leaned into the lessons I’d learned during my weight loss journey and military career. I asked myself, “Who am I without the uniform? What do I stand for?” The answers to those questions became the foundation of my brand.
Building a Business Powerhouse
With clarity about my identity and purpose, I launched my business, SLAY to Success. My mission was to empower women—especially veterans—to step into their power and build authentic personal brands.
Through keynote speaking, image consulting, and coaching, I’ve had the privilege of helping others discover their unique value and communicate it to the world. Whether it’s a woman transitioning from the military or a professional seeking to elevate her career, I’ve seen firsthand how intentional branding can transform lives.
Lessons Learned Along the Way
Reflecting on my journey, here are the five key lessons that have shaped my path:
Transformation Starts Within: True change begins with mindset. Whether you’re losing weight or redefining your career, the work starts internally.
Discipline Is Your Superpower: Success isn’t about motivation; it’s about consistency. Show up for yourself every day, even when it’s hard.
Resilience Is Built, Not Born: Challenges are opportunities to grow. Embrace them, and you’ll come out stronger.
Your Brand Is Your Legacy: How you show up in the world matters. Be intentional about the story you’re telling.
Never Dim Your Light: You are worthy of taking up space and owning your greatness. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
How You Can Start Your Transformation
If my journey resonates with you, here are some steps to begin your own transformation:
Set a Clear Goal: Identify what you want to achieve and why it matters to you.
Take Small, Consistent Actions: Big changes don’t happen overnight. Focus on making small, intentional choices every day.
Invest in Yourself: Whether it’s hiring a coach, reading books, or attending workshops, prioritize your growth.
Build Your Brand: Think about how you want to be perceived and start aligning your actions, appearance, and mindset with that vision.
Surround Yourself with Support: Seek out people who uplift and inspire you. Community is key to staying motivated.
Final Thoughts: The Transformation That Changed Everything
Every transformation story is unique, but they all share one common thread: they start with a decision. For me, that decision to lose 60 pounds wasn’t just about meeting the Air Force’s weight requirement—it was about proving to myself that I was capable of extraordinary change. It was the catalyst for a life built on resilience, discipline, and a commitment to showing up as my best self.
That moment in high school sparked a chain reaction. It taught me how to embrace challenges, navigate transitions, and create a personal brand rooted in authenticity and purpose. From my 30-year military career to launching SLAY to Success, every chapter of my life has been guided by the lessons I learned during that pivotal time.
So, what about you? What decision are you waiting to make that could redefine your future? Transformation isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. It’s about stepping into your power and realizing you are the author of your own story.
If you’ve been looking for a sign, here it is. Make the choice today to rewrite your narrative. The version of you that you’ve always dreamed of isn’t far away—it’s waiting for you to claim it.
